Parent Council Meeting

29th November 2018 – third meeting of academic year 2018-19

In Attendance: Maria Kwok; Ulrike Goessman; Beatrice Trench; Lynn Andrew (secretary);

Head Teacher Ms Shona Henderson.

CHIRSTMAS FAYRE 12TH DECEMBER (GYM HALL)

Each class has an activity or games stall. Parents Council will have a tuck shop stall using the remaining stock from Halloween. We will also have a ‘nearly new’ uniform stall, suggested donation £1 per item.

  • Volunteers: Beatrice / Lynn. Other parent volunteers are welcome email lynn.andrew@sds.co.uk or contact via Parents Council Whats App

CATCHMENT AREA ISSUES

Beatrice met with our councillor to highlight the issue that Blackfriars is not appearing as an option on the online school application system even for families who live very close to the school. The City Council also blocked access to the online application system from school computers meaning the school, which had opened the computer suite to help families apply, were blocked. There is further need to clarify the catchment area as new housing is built in the local area.

  • Beatrice is composing a letter and gathering evidence of pre and post application figures plus stories showing the issues this is causing families.  Please contact the school if you wish to share a story or email lynn.andrew@sds.co.uk

UNIFORM RECYCLING SCHEME

Having uniform stall at Christmas Fayre, if this goes well the Parents Council will continue with the scheme but with further marketing and greater clarity on donations/regular re-sale sessions.  We will also work with our contact from Apparel Exchange to explore if this might form part of our uniform and general clothes recycling approach in the New Year. (note on Apparel Exchange at end)

BOOK BAG UPDATE

The Monday afternoon bookbag sign out has been very successful with positive feedback from parents, and with great promotion via the App. A request that all bookbags are returned by Monday 17th should be put out on the App. The BB sign out sessions will start again from the second week of school Monday 14th of January.

OTHER

Parent’s council may be able to support some of these through contacts to the council / other organisations and by looking in to additional funding options

  • Unable to use the school out with school hours for the wider community activity without a ‘let’. Need to contact council about options around this.
  • Need to revisiting school meals / clothing grants as not being fully used. Highlight eligibility criteria, offer help to apply and access to online site in the computer suite. Seek advice from Children’s First to support families.
  • Aim to make better use of space behind the P1 huts. Currently a container there which the HT would like to make more attractive. Asked the council about fencing. Aim to make a green space, garden/growing area, outdoor activity space, possible intergenerational project.

Other Information

  • STEM in Gorbals will be held in Blackfriars this session
  • An alternative learning environment ‘The Hive’ has been created for upper school pupils.
  • A soft start / soft finish, is being trialled with pupils who may benefit.
