P5 Class Newsletter Term 3
Welcome back!
Literacy
For reading this term we will be completing close reading tasks on a variety of fiction and non-fiction literacy world texts. In writing, we will be focusing on persuasive and report writing. Progressing through the beginning of second level, it will be very helpful for your child to read novels and texts with examples of these. Books can be borrowed from the school library as well as the local Gorbals Library.
Numeracy
For number work this term we will be rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000, reading and writing decimal fractions and exploring fractions. We will also be multiplying two digits with both one and two digits so its very important that children learn their times tables. Please take the time to practice times tables with your child up to the 12 times table. There are also a variety of games online to support their learning such as Sumdog or Topmarks.
In beyond number we will be looking at area and perimeter of regular and irregular shapes, calculating time intervals and making 3D shapes. We will also investigate Roman numerals and number patterns.
Context of learning
Our context of learning this term will be the Romans, we will be creating a timeline of when they lived, comparing their lives with modern day, looking at their inventions and famous people.
Expressive Arts
We are continuing with our Baby Strings inputs on Fridays and your child will continue to learn the violin, viola or cello with our music specialists.
We will also be continuing with some Scottish Dance around Burns Day.
Health and wellbeing
This term our big focuses will be Internet Safety and working through our Sexual Health and Relationships (SHRE) programme, if you have any questions around this please feel free to contact.
PE
We will have an outdoor PE slot on a Monday afternoon and indoor slot on a Thursday.
Please send your child into school in their PE kit on these days and ensure that they have a spare pair of indoor shoes in their bags for their indoor PE slots on a Monday. As well as that we are hoping to try and do the Mile Run as much as possible so ensure that children have appropriate shoes.
Homework
Homework will be set on Seesaw again this term. I will set a Numeracy task and Spelling on Seesaw every week. There are additional tasks that will be set throughout the term by myself as well as school wide literacy, numeracy and out-door learning challenges.
For spelling, please ensure that your child is practicing every word each night and writing 5 sentences over the week. Below are some examples of ways to practice their spelling at home beyond copying each word nightly.
If you need a paper copy of the homework to complete, please ask and I will send home a jotter with a paper copy weekly. Furthermore, please make good use of the ‘draft’ option on Seesaw to ensure homework is not submitted when incomplete.
Military spelling - do jumping jacks. As you clap, say a letter to spell your words.
Use the O (sentence openers) of VCOP to write great sentences using 4 of your spelling words.
Draw a picture outline – use your spelling words and colouring pens or pencils to colour them in very small writing.
Find the definition of your spelling words in a dictionary. Write the definition.
Split your words into syllables, remember to clap, tap or pop your hand under your chin to find the syllables.
Use the V(vocabulary) of VCOP to write great spelling sentences with 4 of your words.
Use the P(punctuation) of VCOP to write great sentences using 4 of your spelling words.
Use the C(connectives) of VCOP to write great sentences using 4 of your spelling words.
Make up your own spelling task (maybe one you can do outdoors). Write what you did on Seesaw.
Where appropriate, reading books will be sent home. For those children who do not receive a reading book home, it is expected that they will be reading at home for enjoyment. If your child wishes they may borrow books from the class library.
Principal Teacher Time/Non class contact time
