Primary 1M Newsletter, Term 2 Dear Parent/ Carer Term 2 already! The boys and girls are doing so well. I am so proud of them. Last term we raised a massive £951 from our sponsored walk. I have already stocked up on Halloween goodies and bought a sensory table. I am also looking to buy programmable robots, audiobook players and much more! This term is super busy. Not only are we continuing to learn our sounds, but we also have the show of the year – the Primary 1 Nativity!
Literacy We have all started to learn our sounds. The sounds we learn will help us to read and write. To support this learning, homework is posted on seesaw twice a week. Please practise formation of these letters on paper and not on electrical devices. All letters should be written in lower case, not upper case. Reading books will start to come home soon. This should be enjoyable! If at any time, your child (or you!) finds the reading homework stressful, stop. All homework is to support the learning in class but I don’t want anyone to find it stressful. We will continue with the drawing club this term. We are alternating between setting, character and an imaginative piece. I can’t wait to show you the progress at Parent’s Evenings!
Numeracy This term we will be working on sequencing numbers, estimating and addition. As always, we will start our learning with concrete materials, then move to abstract (pictures), then written. In Beyond Number we will be learning symmetry, money as well as the days of the week.
Health and Wellbeing Our PE days continue to be Thursday and Friday. Children should come to school in their PE clothes (joggers, leggings, white polo shirt, trainers and school jumper). On Thursday I am focusing on gymnastics. It is vital that your child is in the correct clothing and footwear. They cannot take part in the whole PE lesson if they are not wearing the correct clothing. On Fridays we do PE outside. If your child does not have the correct footwear, they can slip on the AstroTurf, especially as the weather gets wetter. No jewellery should be worn and hair should be tied back on PE days.
IDL Our IDLs this term include concluding our work on animal habitats, the emergency services and learning about the Nativity story.
Homework We continue to use SeeSaw for our homework. The homework is linked directly to what we do in class, so to support your child at home please try to complete as much homework as you can.
How can I help my child? • Practise formation of letters, names and numbers. Please note – your child should write their name in lowercase letters except for the first letter. Try saying a number and see if your child can write the number themselves. If they struggle, write the number in a yellow pen and they can overwrite the number in pencil. This technique can be repeated for any formation. • Read lots of stories! Stories help your child to grow their love for books and their imagination. These stories do not need to be in English, if you speak another language at home, please read in your home language. Please allow your child to hold the book and point to things like the first letter/ word and turn the pages. • Say number sequences and ask your child what the next number is, what number is missing. Go up the number line (0, 1, 2, 3…) and down (20, 19, 18…). I find doing this in the car, on the bus or while walking along the street is a great time to practise number sequences.
Final note … Our stay, Play and Read last term was a massive success. The children loved having you in and I hope you found it a nice experience to see what a morning is like in P1.
Just a reminder that this term’s Stay, Play and Reads are: Wednesday 5th November and Wednesday 3rd December. It would be lovely to see the room full again!
If you have any concerns, please reach out to me on seesaw or through the school office.
