Dear parents/carers,
I hope you all had a wonderful festive period and are ready for the term ahead.
Literacy
Reading
This term we will be reading, ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’. This book ties in directly with our Context for Learning (COL). The message it delivers is an important one, it portrays that all people no matter what race, gender or age you are should be treated equally.
Writing
Our focus for fiction this term will be character, and our non-fiction focus will be procedural. We will use a variety of contexts for this including real life applications, particularly regarding character writing.
Talking & Listening
Our Context of Learning gives us an opportunity to discuss fact and opinion.
Numeracy
We will continue building on our knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages as well as multiplication and division with decimals and remainders. For beyond number, children will be covering a range of topics within measure with Mrs Jimeneze.
Health and Well Being
This term’s learning will be Sexual Health and Relationship Education. Please note, Mr McCormick has worked hard with parents on this, and together, have made adaptations to some of our lessons. Please keep a look out for updates on this through Seesaw or our school app.
P.E Days
We will have a new gym day in term 3. I will let you know closer to the time what our new gym day will be.
COL - Context of Learning (Topic)
Our Context of Learning this term will be World War II: The Homefront. This is a very large topic and one that is always left to P7 due to the seriousness of the subject matter.
Music
Each Thursday, children will have a half-our session of Baby Strings. In this, children will be learning to play either the cello, viola or violin.
Homework
We will continue homework as usual this term – reading, spelling, numeracy and a termly homework grid.
Residential Trip
Children are looking forward to their residential trip, which will take place in February. We will have lots more information on this closer to the time.
Family Outdoor Learning - The Night Sky
Winter is a time of dark nights so let's get outside on a clear evening and learn about what we can see in our night sky. A great app to use on a mobile phone is Star Walk 2. You can point it at the sky and it will tell you the planets, constellations and stars you can see https://starwalk.space/en If you have an Android phone, Stellarium is also very good.
A good website to use is The National School Observatory, which gives simple pictures of what you will see at certain times, when facing North, South, East or West.

Can you find Polaris, the North Star, which ancient travellers used to navigate? Can you spot Mars, Jupiter or Saturn, which are all visible during January? Mars glows orange! Remember to post what you find on SeeSaw or tell your teacher/class. Happy Stargazing!
Thank you in advance for your support!
Mrs Ritchie
