Primary 6/5 Newsletter
Term 3
Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome to Term 3 and thank you for your continued support. The class have quickly settled back into their school routine following the winter break. Below is an overview of this term for Primary 6/5. Please keep an eye on Seesaw for any further updates throughout this term.
Literacy
In writing this term, the class will be learning how to create procedural, character description and setting description texts. In reading, the children will continue to look at both fiction and non-fiction texts. The pupils will develop their reading skills through completing literacy circle jobs. The children have a group novel which they will be reading throughout each week, and they will also be looking at some nonfiction texts focussing on our class topic (Mary Queen of Scots). The children will continue to receive new spelling words at the beginning of each week which will be posted on Seesaw. The class have a spelling test every Friday on their words. Children can practice their spelling words using a number of active spelling strategies at home or in school in preparation for the test. The class will also receive weekly grammar lessons. The pupils will receive weekly grammar homework to support their learning in class.
Numeracy
In numeracy this term, we will cover a number of areas including sequencing, decimals and fractions. The pupils will also continue to develop their understanding of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). The children will be working on ‘beyond number’ topics, which this term will be angles, symmetry measurement and money. In class pupils will also participate in daily ‘number talks’ to develop their mental strategies for the four operations. Please encourage your child to practice these skills on Sumdog on a weekly basis.
Health and Well-being
Our P.E days will be Wednesday (indoors) and Friday (outdoors). Children can continue to attend school wearing their gym clothes with their school jumper and can bring a change of shoes if needed. Please ensure that your child does not wear jewellery to school on P.E days.
Other Context for Learning (Topic)
Our topic for this term is Mary Queen of Scots, in which we will be looking at her life, death and other important historical events of her time. At home you could research this topic and have discussions about it with your child.
Homework
Homework will continue on Seesaw. The children will have a new homework grid for this term. The homework grid will be posted on your child’s journal. The pupils will have a weekly maths and grammar task which will support their in-class learning. These tasks and the pupils weekly spelling words will be posted in their activity section on Seesaw. Please encourage your child to read regularly at home and to practise their spelling words ahead of their test each Friday. There are spelling practise ideas listed in the spelling menu on Seesaw.
Expressive Arts
We will be continuing to learn a stringed instrument with Baby Strings. This will continue to take place on Thursdays. The children also have weekly in class art lessons in which they will be developing a variety of artistic skills.
Again, thank you for your continued support and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in contact,
Miss Hopgood and Mrs Veitch
