Term 2
Dear parents and carers,
I hope you had a lovely and relaxing October break. The children have had a great start to the year and have settled in well to the routine of Primary 1.
This term is a very busy one! Not only are we beginning to learn our sounds but soon we will also be starting to practise for the biggest show of the year- the P1 nativity!
In November there will also be our first parents evening appointments. This will give you the opportunity to find out how your child is progressing at school. I look forward to seeing you then!
Literacy
We have all started to learn our sounds. The sounds we learn will help us to read and write. To support this learning, homework is posted on seesaw twice a week. Please practise formation of these letters on paper and not on electrical devices. All letters should be written in lower case, not upper case.
Reading books will start to come home soon. This should be enjoyable! If at any time, your child (or you!) finds the reading homework stressful, stop. All homework is to support the learning in class, but I don’t want anyone to find it stressful.
We will continue with the drawing club this term. We are alternating between setting, character and an imaginative piece. The children have been really enjoying this, and I can’t wait to show you the progress at Parent’s Evenings!
Numeracy
This term we will be working on sequencing numbers, estimating and addition. As always, we will start our learning with concrete materials, then move to abstract (pictures), then written.
In Beyond Number we will be learning symmetry, shape, money and the days of the week.
Health and Wellbeing
Our PE days continue to be Tuesday and Thursday. Children should come to school in their PE clothes (joggers, leggings, white polo shirt, trainers and school jumper). It is vital that your child is in the correct clothing and footwear. They cannot take part in the whole PE lesson if they are not wearing the correct clothing.
On Tuesdays we do PE outside. If your child does not have the correct footwear, they can slip on the AstroTurf, especially as the weather gets wetter. No jewellery should be worn, and hair should be tied back on PE days.
IDL
Our IDLs this term are emergency services, animal habitats and learning about the Nativity story.
Homework
We continue to use Seesaw for our homework. The homework is linked directly to what we do in class, so to support your child at home please try to complete as much homework as you can.
How can I help my child?
Final note …
Our stay, Play and Read last term was a massive success. The children loved having you in and I hope you found it a nice experience to see what a morning is like in P1.
Just a reminder that this term’s Stay, Play and Reads are:
Wednesday 5th November and Wednesday 3rd December.
It would be lovely to see the room full again!
If you have any concerns, please reach out to me on seesaw or through the school office.
Mrs Gillespie
