P5/4 Class Newsletter
Happy New Year! Welcome back for term 3.
Literacy
In reading this term we will be looking at finding information using alphabetical order, answering open ended questions and comparing characters in different texts. You can help your child to make links by asking them to think about the characters in their books at home or in movies that have things in common. For writing we will be focusing on explanation, report and persuasive writing.
Numeracy
In our number work we will be looking at rounding to estimate the answer to problems, solving word problems and fractions. For beyond number we will be focusing on symmetry, the different ways to use money and probability.
Please take the time to practice times tables with your child up to the 12 times table. There are also a variety of games online to support their learning such as Sumdog or Topmarks.
Health and Wellbeing
For Health and Wellbeing this term we will be focusing on our RSHPE programme, information around this has already been shared by Mr McCormick via Seesaw Messages. A further update will be shared closer to the time of starting the programme.
PE
This term we will be trying to get outdoors more often as the weather improves, particularly with the daily mile.
Our PE sessions this term are:
Indoors on a Monday.
Outdoors on a Tuesday.
Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for both indoor and outdoor activities with a change of shoes and PE clothes on these days.
Outdoor learning
We will be aiming to be learning outdoors at least once each week so please ensure your child comes to school in warm and weather appropriate clothing. Our Outdoor Learning day will be Thursday, however we could be outdoors any time! This term, Mrs Murdoch will be sharing some Outdoor Learning ideas on SeeSaw, for you to enjoy doing together as a family.
Expressive Arts
This term your child will be continuing to learn an instrument with the Baby Strings programme.
Homework
Homework will be set on Seesaw again this term. I will set a Numeracy task and Spelling on Seesaw every week. Each term, I will upload a homework grid with additional activities for your child to choose from each week. This is to ensure that your child has variety in their homework choices and is optional.
For spelling, please ensure that your child is practicing every word each night and writing 10 sentences over the week. Below are some examples of ways to practice their spelling at home beyond copying each word nightly.
If you need a paper copy of the homework to complete please ask and I will send home a jotter with a paper copy weekly. Furthermore, please make good use of the ‘draft’ option on Seesaw to ensure homework is not submitted when incomplete.
Military spelling - do jumping jacks. As you clap, say a letter to spell your words.
Use the O (sentence openers) of VCOP to write great sentences using 4 of your spelling words.
Draw a picture outline – use your spelling words and colouring pens or pencils to colour them in very small writing.
Find the definition of your spelling words in a dictionary. Write the definition.
Split your words into syllables, remember to clap, tap or pop your hand under your chin to find the syllables.
Use the V(vocabulary) of VCOP to write great spelling sentences with 4 of your words.
Use the P(punctuation) of VCOP to write great sentences using 4 of your spelling words.
Use the C(connectives) of VCOP to write great sentences using 4 of your spelling words.
Make up your own spelling task (maybe one you can do outdoors). Write what you did on Seesaw.
Where appropriate, ORT reading books will be sent home. For those children who do not receive a reading book home, it is expected that they will be reading at home for enjoyment. If your child wishes, they may borrow books from the class library.
Wishing you all a fantastic third term,
Miss Love
